Halloween is a tradition that has been celebrated on the 31st of October for centuries in Europe. In ancient times is was believed that all laws of space and time were suspended on Halloween night, and would allow the spirits to mingle with the people alive.
In the late 1800 the tradition was brought from European immigrants to Canada and later to the US.
Today Halloween is still celebrated by children with "trick or treating". They go from house to house dressed up in costumes and yell trick or treat them from house to house in their neighborhood and the adults hand out candy. Some even go as far as using fog maker machines or sound effects to create a ghostly atmosphere around their house.
Favorite costumes are monsters, devils, vampires, witches and other scary characters, although it has also become more and more popular to dress up as a figure from a favorite movie theme such as a pirate, superman and many others.
Many adults like to dress up too, and therefore many Halloween parties are taking place, in private homes and in night clubs. Most clubs offer free admission for people wearing a costume, and also generous prices for the most original Halloween costume.
