Did you ever think how Halloween came to be!..
On the night of October 31, the Celts celebrated Samhain, the day they believed the spirits of the dead came back to walk the earth in search for souls of the living. Celts thought that the presence of these spirits make it easier for the priests to foretell the future. To honor the event, the priests built huge sacred bonfires where the people of the towns gathered to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to the Celtic gods. They wore Costumes of animal heads and skins, dancing around the fires attempting to tell each other's fortunes.
The traditions have varied slightly over the centuries. By the 800s, Christianity had eased its way into Celtic lands. Pope Boniface IV named November 1 as a time to honor saints and martyrs, or All Saints'Day. People of today believe that the Pope was trying to replace the Celtic festival of the dead with a holiday supported by the church.
Samhain started to be referred to as All-hallows Eve and eventually, Halloween. Around the 1840s the tradition of Halloween came to America. Trick-or-treating is thought to have started with a 19th century European tradition called souling. On All Souls'Day the early Christians would walk from town to town begging for "soul cakes". With each cake they received they promised to say a prayer for a loved one that had passed on.
Most may not know this old tradition however, we all love Halloween, want to dress scary and have some fun. In the meantime there are so many possibilities to appear creepy. Most people have a fancy piece of garment in their closet already and just need accessories like a Hat or Fishnet Stocking, to top off the outfit. It's a little easier for kids, whose priority it is to go trick-or-treating. Adults accompany their kids and lots of them want to dress scary too.
